It is heartbreaking… to see fellow beings fleeing from their homeland of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East and refused entry, shelter in neighbouring countries. This has lead to the creation of refugee camps on international borders across the continents.
Inhumane to fellow humans… many refugee camps lack basic human necessities of clean and hygienic water, food or shelter. According to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), 70.8 million individuals have been forcibly displaced worldwide because of human rights violations, conflict and civil wars globally.
India isn’t alien from refugees. India has been welcoming to the refugees from Pakistan, Tibet, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Myanmar, although it is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugees convention nor the 1967 protocol.
Citizenship… the refugees were welcomed in India but denied Indian citizenship if they did not have valid travel documents (which is usually the case for migrants). The Citizenship Act, 1955 labels such persons as ‘illegal immigrants’.
Moral evolution… The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 aims to provide citizenship to that are forced to seek shelter in India because of religious persecution in their home countries. They primarily include Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Arguments… The Citizenship Amendment bill created unrest in certain parts of India, organizations say that the bill will leave the burden of illegal migrants to the state alone. The centre later clarified that the burden will be shared by the entire country.
It all comes down to humanity… It is the nation’s moral responsibility to help the refugees on humane grounds. But But But… India being a densely populated nation creates stress on public infrastructure and facilities. The development and maintenance of the Nation’s amenities are a huge spend for the government. The responsibility eventually is passed on to the taxpayers, since it is their contribution to the government’s revenue.
